Samuel Ullman was born in Germany and was a rabbi who emigrated to the United States to escape persecution of Jews. He was also an entrepreneur who started out selling groceries and went on to become a director of a local bank. He left behind several collections of poetry, the most famous of which is the poem “Youth”:

Youth is not a stage of life, but a state of mind.
To stay young, creativity, a strong will, and courage are indispensable.
To master the part of yourself that craves comfort, you must never forget the spirit of challenge.
Time may etch wrinkles on the skin, but the loss of passion causes the soul to wrinkle.
Worry, doubt, anxiety, fear, and disappointment—it is these pressures that age us and rob us of the innocence of childhood, as pure as the blue sky.
No matter how old we are, we must always hold onto a boundless longing for the future, as brilliant as the starry night sky; a reverence for all things and ideas; a spirit of challenge; childlike curiosity; the joy of life; and a love for existence.
As long as you hold onto faith, you will possess youth; if you harbor doubt, your body and mind will wither.
As long as you are filled with confidence, you will possess youth; if you are filled with fear, your body and mind will wither.
As long as you hold onto hope, you will surely remain forever young; if you hold onto disappointment, you will grow old and decrepit.
After reading this poem in the early morning, your whole body is filled with strength, and it feels as though the sun is revolving around you.
