The improvement of aluminum die-casting molds cannot be achieved solely by pressing the solution onto the tool steel.
This morning, I received a consultation from Mr. Zhou. I have a set of aluminum die-casting molds that often corrode during core pulling. The new mold has not been put into mass production yet, and there was a problem during the trial mold. The mold steel used is Tian 8418, and the inner hole of the product is severely scratched due to adhesive material. May I ask what tool steel to use for improvement?
The erosion of aluminum die-casting molds cannot be solely attributed to the tool steel. Factors such as the feeding method and channel size of the mold can also affect the failure of mold erosion or cracking. So I reminded him whether the feeding method and mold structure are reasonable. If there are structural problems, you need to optimize them first.
Mr. Zhou said that due to the problem of core pulling at the inlet of the adhesive, the pressure is reduced and the product cannot be pressed brightly. When the pressure is increased, the inner hole is pulled and the product is very thin.
Aluminum liquid is easily eroded when facing the core pulling punch, so it is best to change the feeding direction, which is the key. Of course, the mold structure cannot be improved, so this type of core pulling requires tool steel with high temperature strength, which means high hardness and good toughness.
Based on past case experience, I recommend using LG die steel with high toughness. LG’s toughness is 8-9 times that of DC53, with a hardness of 54-58HRC. Its toughness is so good that it does not break even when bent. Many aluminum radiator components have thin-walled bone cores that are prone to erosion and fracture, and they all use LG die steel.
Another die casting expert has also verified that LG’s erosion resistance is better than HD, 8407, 8418,2344, so I recommend it to Mr. Zhou.
